Offence categories
Police classify all offences into one of the seven offence categories listed below. These categories have been ordered according to the volume of offences recorded. Further details on the offences classified within each of these categories can be found in the glossary.
- Dishonesty offences
- Drug and anti-social offences
- Violent offences
- Property damage
- Property abuse
- Administrative offences
- Sexual offences
The distribution of crime into the seven offence categories has remained similar since 1994 as figure 4 shows. Sixty percent of all offences in 2000 fell into the dishonesty offence category. This was followed by drug and anti-social offences at 12 percent, violent offences at 10 percent and property damage at 9 percent. The following sections examine each of the seven offence categories, and take a detailed look at some particular types of offences within them.
