Friday, June 10, 1999: Jury chosen for Scott Watson trial
The jury selection process took less than an hour and the trial is expected to last for three months with hundreds of witnesses called to give evidence. The jury will be taken to Furneaux Lodge in the Marlborough Sounds to see where the events took place.
Scott Watson, 27, appeared before the court to formally enter his pleas of not guilty to the charges of murdering Olivia Jane Hope, 17, and Benjamin Innes Smart, 21, on or about January 1 in the Marlborough Sounds / Cook Strait area.
The trial is due to begin on Monday, June 14, 1999. It is set to become the trial of the decade. The publicity and media hype is unprecedented in New Zealand. Undoubtedly those in the

Scott Watson’s face and boat are still banned from appearing in the newspapers and on television channels due to the nature of testimony that is to be heard in this case. Witnesses are to testify and identity him as being present that fateful New Year’s Eve night. The court sees it as prejudicial to his case if his face and boat is broadcast nationwide.
