Secret Witness says Waston confessed to the murders
In the Wellington High Court, the Watson jury was hearing evidence from a secret witness who had shared a prison cell with the accused last year.
This part of the trial has been closed to the public and only the families of the victims and Watson’s parents were allowed to watch from the public gallery.
During the testimony, the secret witness stated that Watson had screamed out two times in his sleep. On the second occasion, he had woken Watson and asked him indirectly if he had committed the murders saying, “Are those people haunting you”. Watson replied “Yeah Mate”. Both men had then exercised within the confines of their cell. The witness asked Watson about Olivia Hope and how he had killed her. Watson proceeded to demonstrate to him how he had attacked Olivia and strangled her. Watson was alleged to have said, “the bitch kept on punching and kicking”.

ess was asked if Watson talked about where the bodies were. In reply he stated that Watson said they wouldn’t find them and “the pigs got nothing on me”.
Defence counsel, Bruce Davidson, asked the witness why he had changed his story about the exchanges with Watson. He stated that today was the first time the witness had said the demonstration was after they had exercised together and previously had said it was when he woke Watson to stop him screaming. The witness repeated his story. The witness was asked about his background and stated that he had lost count of the many times he had been in prison. He also said he had alcohol and abuse issues and a psychiatric history.
The Crown case is expected to end next Wednesday.
